Silly Top Hat for Amigurumi - Guest Post

Today I am going to share the Guest post of one lovely person who was kind enough to provide me one. So let's see what her post is about. Shall we?

Who doesn't need a hat? We have them for every occasion and temperature: winter hats, summer hats, formal hats, funny hats etc. Today I am going to present you the Silly Top Hat! I know that top hats are usually worn under special circumstances, but not this one!

This one is a silly hat for your amigurumi, barbie doll, favorite cactus plant, just to make you smile and make your day. It is a very quick and easy project, even if you are a beginner you could finish it in half an hour, and it requires just a small amount of yarn. Let's begin!

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
  • Small amount of worsted yarn (acrylic or cotton) I used acrylic on this one
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook (E)
  • stitch marker
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS:
  • MR: Magic Ring
  • sc: single crochet
  • st: stitch
  • inc: increase
  • dec: decrease
  • BLO: Back Loops Only
  • FLO: Front Loops Only

GAUGE is not critical for this project but I strongly recommend to keep your stitches tight so the hat can keep its shape. By using a 3,5 mm crochet hook and worsted yarn you will end up with a hat approximately 4 cm (1,5 inches) in height. You can use whatever leftover yarn you have in hand, or a double strand and the appropriate hook to end up with different sizes of hats.

NOTE:
  • I always use the magic ring method for almost anything that is worked on the round. If you are not familiar with the magic ring you can chain 2 and then continue with the pattern. It is really easy though and there are dozens of tutorials on You Tube to learn this technique.
  • The pattern is worked in continuous rounds and you will need your stitch marker to mark the end (or beginning) of each round. Do not join with a slip stitch.

PATTERN:

Round 1: MR 6 sc in the ring (6)
Round 2: sc inc in each st around (12)
Round 3: * sc in the first st, inc in the next st * , repeat from * to * 6 times (18)
Round 4: * sc in the first 2 st, inc in the next st *  repeat from * to * 6 times (24)
Round 5: in BLO sc around (24)
Round 6: sc around (24)
Round 7: * sc in the next 6 st, dec in the next st * repeat from * to * 3 times (21)
Round 8: * sc in the next 5 st, dec in the next st * repeat from * to * 3 times (18)
Round 9: * sc in the next 4 st, dec in the next st * repeat from * to * 3 times (15)
Round 10: * sc in the next 3 st, dec in the next st * repeat from * to * 3 times (12)
Round 11: sc around (12)
Round 12: in FLO inc in each st around (24)
